Meet at the entrance to the park; from I-35 South,exit at Fischer Road (first exit south of Loop 410 in southern Bexar County).Go across the freeway and about 1/2 mile to Campground Road (look for the large green sign).Turn right and follow the dirt road to the campground. Just as you enter the park, turn right into the trailer park to the administrative center. Bring $2 for admission.

November 4,Saturday,7:45 AM Field Trip to Lazy U Ranch A walk around the various habitats of Nancy and Craig Russell ’s place on the Guadalupe River near Seguin.Directions: Go east on I-10 and exit at first Seguin exit, #603, to Blinking Light at FM 725. Turn right on 725 and go 2.6 miles from the blinking light to Naumann Road on the left. This is just an ordinary street sign, easy to miss. Meet here at 7:45 AM. We are to be at the gate at 8:00 AM and the gate will be locked behind us. Bring lunch and water. Merlin, 1 Brown Thrasher, an American Kestrel, Red-shouldered Hawk,. This park has Scrub and Blue Jays and Bewick’s and Carolina Wrens. Signs of migration were House Wren, Nashville, Yellow, and Orange-crowned Warbler, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Lark, Chipping, and Clay-colored Sparrow.

Highlights: Tallying 20 species before we left the parking lot, our 7 new birders got quite a Life List right away. We totaled 36 species including late Turkey and Black Vultures seen while closing up at the end. The first surprise was 2 American Robins gobbling up green grapes in the vines on the swimming pool side of our parking lot. It was a great day for migrants. Two Mourning Warblers in the weeds in Olmos Creek at the south end of the Park plus a female and an immature male Indigo Bunting were quite a find. Thanks, Richard Grant for help on those. There were Yellow, Black and White and Nashville Warblers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Empidonax flycatchers, 1 Orchard Oriole, 2 Lesser Goldfinches. The Crows are still around. We saw 4 in the south end of the Park. The Red-shouldered Hawk finished off with a great show of calling as it spiraled up out of sight as we left.

Go across the freeway, and turn right onto the west side access road. Go north for about 1 mile and follow signs to Friedrich Park. Expect trails to be steep and rocky. Leader: To be arranged.

Saturday, Mar 4. Park Chalk Bluff and Road 202, Uvalde County. Meet at 8:00 am at the intersection of Highway 55 and the entrance road, approximately 15 miles NW of Uvalde. Allow 2 hours travel time. Bring lunch, drinks, and money for park entrance fee. Field trip will concentrate on "western and southern" birds, although early migrants such as Louisiana Waterthrush and Northern Parula may be possible. Our last trip to Road 202 had Olive Sparrows, Black Phoebe, Green and Ringed Kingfishers. Leader: Bob Doe

Turn left across the freeway and go approximately 1/2 mile to the entrance road (watch for green sign). Follow entrance road past the gravel pit and as you start down the hill, turn right to the registration office. Bring $2.00 entrance fee.

This is about 5-6 miles after crossing the Guadalupe River northbound on US 281. Field trip will concentrate on water birds on Canyon Lake. Lunch in New Braunfels. In the afternoon, we will search the agricultural fields east of New Braunfels for possible Mountain Plover and/or longspurs. Bring $10 for park access and lunch.

Saturday, Feb 5. 8:00 AM Cartwright Ranch. Leader Jean Bensmiller. Meet at 8:00 am at the causeway over Lake Corpus Christi on FM 534. From San Antonio, take I-37 toward Corpus Christi. Exit at exit 47 (Swinney Switch) and proceed about 1 mile along the access road. At the intersection with FM534, turn right, and go down the hill. Park off the road before you reach the causeway over the lake. Allow about 1 1/2 hours driving time from San Antonio. Bring sack lunch and water. This is one of our most popular trips, with approximately 100 species seen each year, ranging from geese to Green Jays.
