San Antonio Christmas Bird Count
The annual survey of all birds within a count area, with teams of several people
walking and driving. All skill levels are needed (non-members welcome) and
this is a great way to get out and see birds. There will be experienced birders
on each team to assist with bird identification. Count hours are from dawn
to dusk, rain or shine. Other hours may be arranged with Ernie Roney, the count
leader. Teams are assigned in advance so call Ernie for details or to volunteer:

Broadway in Alamo Heights, turn west on Ogden to stop sign at Greely Street.
Turn left one block, then right on Viesca to small parking lot on left before

SAAS field trip to the Pullin Ranch
Brush country birds are the specialty. Take I-37 south to FM 99, exit right
to Whitsett. Go through the (SMALL!) town of Whitsett, past the railroad tracks
to Pullin Lane on the left at edge of town. Bring lunch and water; wear long
pants and heavy shoes for this walking trip. Driving time about 1 hour, 15
min.

Meet Leader Mike Creese at the South Shore Unit of Choke Canyon State Park
at 8:00 AM. Allow about 1 1/2 hours travel time from San Antonio. Entrance
fee required (or TPWD passport). Directions: Take I-37 SE towards Corpus Christi
to the US 281 (Rio Grande Valley) exit near Three Rivers. Follow US 281 into
Three Rivers (watch your speed!) and turn right on highway 72. Follow Highway
72 to the entrance of the South Shore unit. ![]()

SAAS field trip to Canyon Lake/New Braunfels
We’ll check the riparian area below the dam for late migrants and arriving
winter visitors, check the lake for loons and Greater Scaup, then spend the
afternoon searching the fields around the New Braunfels airport for sparrows,
longspurs and cranes. Meet leader Bob Doe at the parking lot on the SOUTH shore
of the Guadalupe River, just below the Canyon Lake Dam. This is accessible
from either Highway 281 or I-35 via state Highway 306 to the Canyon Dam turnoff.

Early September is the peak of shorebird migration, and we will be going to
one of the best inland shorebird spots in Texas. We will also search the riparian
area along the river for passerine migrants. Meet at 8:00 am at the entrance
to Hornsby Bend treatment plant in Austin. Directions: Take I-35 north to Ben
White Blvd (Highway 71) in south Austin. Go east on Highway 71, past the airport,
to FM 973. Turn left on FM 973 (toward Manor). The entrance is on your left

SAAS Bird Walk at San Antonio Zoo
Besides having an excellent bird collection, the San Antonio Zoo is populated
by numerous wild birds taking advantage of the safe, food-rich site. Several
species are rearing young. Your guides will be Harry Noyes and Maria Falcon,
SAAS members who are also zoo volunteers (and a zookeeper, in Maria's case).
They know the zoo well (even if they don't know all the birds!). Meet outside
front gate at 9 a.m.; 3903 N. St. Mary's.
To
smooth entry and reduce or eliminate cost, we really need to know in advance
how many people will be coming and how many are zoo members.

Uvalde County
This will be an EXPLORATORY trip to some potentially interesting places in
and around Uvalde. We will probably stop at County Road 202, the Uvalde Fish
Hatchery and Ft Inge State Park, as well as just exploring back roads in the
area. Meet at 7:00 am (NOTE THE TIME) in the parking lot just north of the
Uvalde County Courthouse (intersection of US 90 and US 83) in Uvalde. Uvalde
is about 2 hours west of San Antonio. Bring lunch and drinks, and if you have
personal “walkie-talkie” radios, bring them to improve communication
between cars.

Meet leader Bob Doe at the Diamond Shamrock Station at the corner of Potranco
and Loop 1604. Due to construction, you must enter off of Potranco. This is
a trip to various locations in western Bexar County, looking for unusual birds.
This area currently has breeding Horned Larks. Previous summer finds in the
area include Olive Sparrow, Black-throated Sparrow, Northern Waterthrush, Indigo
Bunting, Bell’s Vireo, Grasshopper Sparrow, Cactus Wren, and numerous
others.

Mitchell Lake Birdathon [not an offical SAAS event]
with Marge Lumpe. A money-raising event in which persons collect pledges for
donations based on how many species of birds they find in a single day or a
flat amount. Proceeds will benefit Mitchell Lake and Audubon Adventures, an
environmental education program for children in grades 3 to 6. Contact Marge
to participate or to pledge money.

Government Canyon State Natural Area
Spring birds and possible Golden-cheeked Warblers. Meet leader Georgina
Schwartz (342-2073) at the gate at the sharp turn on Galm Road in west Bexar
County. From Loop 1604, drive west about 3.5 miles on FM 471/Culebra Road,
turn right on Galm Road, go about 1.5 miles to the gate on the left. Moderate
walking is required. Bring snacks and water. Spring birds and possible Golden-cheeked
Warblers. We can stay for lunch and all be out by 2:00 PM. Free, but contributions

Choke Canyon State Park
Mike Creese will lead a tour of Choke Canyon and is inviting everyone to come. “I
believe that this is the best birding park in Texas and the birds will be migrating
through. Also, the time is right for the wildflowers to bloom and if we have
a good, sunny day, the butterflies should be in the air.” Drive south
on IH 37 to exit 72, drive into Three Rivers, and at the courthouse, turn right
onto Hwy 72. Drive west for 4 miles to the South Shore Unit. We will meet in
parking lot by HQs gate at 7:30 AM.

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
Chance to see Whooping Cranes, Bald Eagle, White-tailed hawk and Kite, early
migrants. Note this is a land-based trip, not a boat trip. Meet 8:00 AM at
the visitor center to the refuge. From San Antonio, take US 181 south to Kenedy.
Turn left onto Texas 72 (toward Yorktown) then quickly right (a mile or so)
onto 239 (toward Goliad). In Goliad, turn right onto US 183, cross the river,
and turn left onto 239 again. Follow 239 through Tivoli to Austwell, then follow
FM road 2040 to the refuge. Allow 2 1/2 hours driving time. Leader: Bob Doe

Trip designed specifically to look for recently-arrived Golden-cheeked Warblers.
Rufous-crowned Sparrows should be singing along the ridgetop. Expect to walk
entire loop trail, 3 miles (Vista Loop and Main Trail) [a walking stick helps].
Meet at the entrance. Directions: From Loop 1604 and IH 10 in NW San Antonio,
take IH 10 west (toward El Paso) exit at Camp Bullis Road. Turn left under
the freeway, then right on the western access road. Follow signs to the park.

Haggard Ranch
in southwest Bexar County, 250 acres with varied brush, trees, and open habitat
with water. Directions: Go south on IH 35 about 4 miles south of Loop 1604,
take exit #137 (Shepherd Road) off IH 35, go left over the interstate, take
another left onto the northbound access road. Drive 0.5 mile to gate (cattle
guard and US Flag). Once through the gate, go over the 2nd cattle guard and
go left at the fork to the house. Leader: Dick Bartels.

Jones-Maltsberger and Starcrest just north of San Antonio International Airport,

The Lower Rio Grande Valley
At a minimum, we will visit Santa Ana NWR, Bentsen Rio-Grande State Park, and
Laguna Atascosa NWR. Participants are encouraged to make lodging reservations
at Best Western Rose Garden Inn and Suites, 300 E Expressway 83, McAllen TX;
956-630-3333. Room rates $56.70–64.00, depending on applicable discounts.
Everyone staying at one location will simplify logistics and communication.
We may have a couple of different trips each day, allowing participants to “customize” their
trip, with a countdown dinner each night to compare notes.

Meet leader Jean Bensmiller at the causeway on FM 534 over Lake Corpus Christi;
arrive early if you want to bird there. About 2 hours south of SA: take I-37
south to exit 47 (Swinney Switch), go to the intersection of FM 534. Turn right
on 534 toward Dinero and go about a half mile; park off the road before you
reach the causeway. Carpooling is encouraged; Jean will lead the caravan to
the ranch gate. Bring lunch and water; no restrooms, but there’s a convenience
store in Swinney Switch. Probable Green Jays, Great Kiskadee and lots more.![]()

Granger Lake area
The area, NE of Austin, is a reliable location for Mountain Plovers and Longspurs.
Meet at Friendship Park on Farm Road 971 at 9:00 AM.
Take I-35 north through Austin to the Taylor exit (US 79) in Round Rock. Take
US 79 east to Taylor, then take Texas 95 north to Granger. In Granger, turn

Botanical Garden bird walk
Meet at the south gate entrance of the Carriage House at 7:45 AM sharp as gates
are locked at 8 AM; walk ends at 10 AM. Free admission. The SA
Botanical Garden is at 555 Funston Place (corner of N. New Braunfels Ave.).

Meet at the entrance parking lot. Take I-10 north to Camp Bullis Road. Turn
left under the freeway and turn right on the western access road. Follow signs

SAAS Century Run
The "100 species Big Day" proved to be the hardest challenge in last
year's Bexar County Birding Challenge. Yet winter in the time of year when
100 species is most easily achieved. Call Bob Doe if you are interested in
starting your year list with a bang. Expect a full day birding. Also call Bob
if you are interested in LEADING a team doing a big day.
