Annual trip for typical brush country birds SE of San Antonio. Take I-37 south
to FM 99, exit right to Whitsett. Go through the [small!] town of Whitsett, past
the railroad tracks, turn left on Pullin Lane at edge of town. (If you get to
the Atascosa River Bridge, you’ve gone too far.) Bring lunch and water.
Wear heavy shoes for walking in the brush. Drive time at least 1 hour and
15 minutes.

Park and Leon Creek Greenway

[9600 Bandera Road], opposite Braun Road, in NW San Antonio. The creek bottom
along Leon Creek has historically been a good place for migrant warblers
and flycatchers. Note: The walk down to the creek bottom is steep, rocky
and slippery.

SAAS Field trip to Bastrop State Park
Meet leader Bob Doe at the pay station at the park entrance at 8:00 AM.
Bastrop State Park is a detached remnant of the “Piney Woods” of east Texas.
We’ll be looking for Pileated Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pine
and Black-and-white Warbler, Yellow-throated Vireo, etc. Bring lunch or lunch
money. In the afternoon, we’ll check for early shorebirds at Hornsby
Bend in Austin. Directions: Take I-35 north to San Marcos. Exit and take Highway
80 east a short distance to Highway 21. Turn left (north) and follow Highway
21 to Bastrop. Outside of Bastrop, turn right on Highway 71. In Bastrop, turn
left onto loop 150 (Chestnut Street, right after the hospital) and follow to
the park entrance. Allow 2 hours from San Antonio. Park entrance fee required.

Warblers before they head south. Other target birds are Hutton’s Vireo
(regular, but sparse) and Bushtit (at least one pair successfully fledged young
this year). Moderate walking (we’ll go at least to the ridgetop along the
south edge of the park). Directions: Take I-10 west past loop 1604, exit at Camp
Bullis Road. Go under the freeway and turn right onto the access road. Follow

offers the opportunity for late migrants and nesting birds. Easy walking
(about 3 miles). Directions: Take SH 16 south from Loop 410 in south San
Antonio 4.2
miles to the park entrance on the left just before you cross the Medina River.
If you miss the turn (it is unmarked), cross the river, make a U-turn at
the first crossover, re-cross the river and turn right into the first road
(driveway).

State Natural Area
Meet leader, Georgina Schwartz at the gate at the sharp turn on Galm
Road in west Bexar County. From Loop 1604, drive west about 3 miles on FM 471/Culebra
Road, turn right on Galm Road, go about 1.5 miles to the gate on the left at
the sharp turn to the right. There will be a long hike up the canyon or a shorter
trip around the lowlands. Moderate walking is required; wear good hiking shoes.
Bring water and snacks or lunch. Spring birds and possible Golden-cheeked Warblers.
We can stay for lunch and all be out by 2:00 PM. Free, but contributions to the
park fund are welcome.

This as-yet-unopened park along the Medina River offers well developed riparian
habitat. Early migrants and late winter visitors expected. Meet Georgina Schwartz
at 8:00 a.m. at the park entrance off State Highway 16, just north of the Medina
River crossing in South Bexar County. Access to the park is from the NORTHBOUND
lanes. [From Loop 410 and TX 16 south, go south on 16 for 4.2 miles to the left

to look for recently arrived Golden-cheeked Warblers. Rufous-crowned Sparrows
should be singing along the ridgetop. Expect to walk entire loop trail, 3 miles
(Vista Loop & Main Trail) [a walking stick helps]. From Loop 1604 and IH
10 in NW San Antonio, take IH 10 west (toward El Paso) exit at Camp Bullis Road.
Turn left under the freeway, then right on the western access road. Follow signs
to the park. NOTE: Be prepared for muddy conditions.

SAAS Field trip to Rio Grande Valley
An unprecedented influx of Mexican species has appeared in the Rio Grande Valley
this year. Hopefully some will stay for our trip. Itinerary will depend on participant
desires and what is currently being seen. Locations are likely to include Bentsen-Rio
Grande State Park, Frontera Audubon Sanctuary, and Santa Ana NWR, among others.
Participants should make lodging reservations for Friday through Sunday nights.
Suggested lodging is at Holiday Inn Express, 2000 S. 10th St, McAllen TX 78501,
phone 1-956-686-1741. Advertised room rate is $59/night. Bring food/snacks for
field lunches; expect “fast food” breakfasts and restaurant dinners

on 534 toward Dinero and go about a half mile; park off the road before you
reach the causeway. Carpooling is encouraged; Jean will lead the caravan
to the ranch
gate. Bring lunch and water; no restrooms, but there’s a convenience

This agricultural area NE of Austin is an historic site for finding Mt Plover,
longspurs, Sprague’s Pipit, Burrowing Owl and others. Meet leader Bob Doe

I-35 north through Austin to Round Rock. Exit on US -79 east. Continue on US

95 to Granger. Turn right (east) on Davila Street (Road 971) to the entrance
to Friendship Park. Allow about 2 1/2 hour drive time. Bring lunch. Fill tank
with gas in Taylor.

Meet leader James Middleton at Judson Nature Trails next to Alamo Heights swimming
pool. At 5900 block of Broadway in Alamo Heights, turn west on Ogden to stop
sign at Greely Street. Turn left one block, then right on Viesca to small parking
lot on left before the swimming pool. Everyone is welcome, binoculars are available. ![]()

SAAS Field trip to Mitchell Lake
Meet leader Bob Doe at 8:00 am at the entrance, 0.7 miles south of Loop 410 on
Moursund in south San Antonio. Entrance fee: $5. Wear footwear appropriate for
walking in tall grass as we will be searching the uplands for LeConte’s
Sparrows, Cassin’s Sparrows and other cryptic winter visitors. ![]()
