SAAS Adopt-a-Highway Trash Pick-up
SAAS has agreed to pick up trash once each quarter. Meet at the sign designating
the San Antonio Audubon’s section along US 281 (south of 410) to pick
up supplies and instructions. Bring gloves and water. The sign is 2 miles south
of the intersection of US 281 with FM 1937. Our section continues 2 miles to
just past the Medina River Bridge. Our goal is always to finish in two hours
or less, so participants can always head over to Mitchell
Lake for some birding afterwards.

SAAS field trip to Pullin Ranch
In Whitsett. TX. Meet there at 8:00 AM. Driving time about 1 1/2 hours. Proceed
down I-37 and exit to FM 99. Take a right and go past the blinking light and
the railroad track in Whitsett to Pullin Road on the left. Bring lunch and
plan to walk around the ranch. We may make a stop at the feed lot on the way
back to look for sandhill cranes and snow geese.

onto Old Wiederstein Road. Continue past Dean Road 4/10 mile to the driveway
and green mailbox on the right. Continue down the driveway; please sign in
at the Visitor Kiosk in the parking area.

historically been a good place for migrant warblers and flycatchers. Note:

Park and Leon Creek Greenway
Meet leader Bob Doe for a trip up Leon Creek (water level permitting). We will
walk up the creek to Bamberger Nature Park and back, about 4 miles total, looking
for migrants. Directions: From the intersection of Loop 1604 and Bandera Road
in NW San Antonio, take Bandera southeast (inside the loop) about 2 miles to
the park entrance on the left (across from Braun Road). Once inside the park,
turn left at the first road, and meet in the large parking lot near the pavilion.
Bring water for the walk. NOTE: Daylight Savings Time starts SUNDAY MORNING!

SAAS field trip to Government Canyon
SNA
By late March, singing and nesting are in full force for many of our resident
birds. Additionally, the flood of spring migrants is swelling. This trip will
be about a 6-mile, round trip up the canyon on good, but rocky, trails. A shorter
(4-mile) trip through the lowlands may be possible. Meet leader Rachel Alvarado
at 8:00 am at the park entrance. Bring water and possibly a trail snack. From
the intersection of Loop 1604 and Culebra Rd (FM 471) in western San Antonio,
take 471 South (west) past Taft High School and the National Shooting Range
to Galm Road. Turn right on Galm and proceed to the park entrance. Entrance
fee is $6 or park pass

SAAS Sky Watch at Comanche Lookout
Mid March is an ideal time to look for large flocks of northbound migrants.
Sandhill Cranes, Anhinga, Geese, Broad-winged and Swainson’s Hawks, accipiters
and falcons can all be seen if conditions are right. Meet leader Bob Doe at
Comanche Lookout Park at 8:00 am. We will bird in the brush around the hill
for resident and migrant passerines, then plan to be on top of the hill about
9:00. From the intersection of Judson Road and Nacogdoches Road in north San
Antonio, go NE on Nacogdoches for about 200 yards to the park entrance on the
left.

Northern Parula are among the earliest migrating warblers; they apparently
nested in the park last year. This trip is to look for returning Northern Parula,
Louisiana Waterthrush, and other early migrants, as well as wintering visitors.
Meet leader Helen Rejzek at the park at 8:00 am, expect about a 3-mile walk
over good trails. From the intersection of SH 16 and Loop 410 in south San
Antonio, take SH 16 south. Turn left into the park just BEFORE you reach the
bridge over the Medina River.

Parks
This trip is to look and listen for returning Golden-cheeked Warblers. We will
also walk up to the south rim to listen for singing Rufous-crowned Sparrows.
In the late morning, we will drive around the hill to the explore the newly
opened Crownridge Park. Meet leader Bob Doe at Friedrich Park at 8:00 am. Trails
are good, but steep in parts. From the intersection of Loop 1604 and I-10 in
NW San Antonio, take I-10 West. Exit at Camp Bullis Road. Go under the freeway
and turn right onto the eastern access road. Follow signs to the park.

Meet leader Jean Bensmiller at 8:00 AM at the causeway on FM 534 over Lake
Corpus Christi; arrive early if you want to bird there. About 2 hours south
of SA: take IH-37 south to exit 47 (Swinney Switch), go to the intersection
of FM 534. Turn right on 534 toward Dinero and go about a half mile; park off
the road before you reach the causeway. Carpooling is encouraged; Jean will
lead the caravan to the ranch gate. Bring lunch and water; no restrooms, but
there’s a convenience store in Swinney Switch. Probable Green Jays, Great
Kiskadee and lots more.

SNA
Introductory walks in newly opened State Natural Area. For people doing the
Bexar County Birding Challenge, this is a good area for Canyon Wren and Common
Raven among others. Bring water and good walking shoes or boots. At least 2
walks available: Visitor Center and Escarpment (approx. 2 miles round trip,
easy walking) and Canyon Walk (approx. 6 miles round trip, moderately rough).
If enough interest, we may do a Ridge and Canyon walk (approx. 6 miles, rough
walking). Directions: From Loop 1604 and Culebra in West Bexar County, take
Culebra (FM 471 South) west past Taft High School and the National Shooting
Range to Galm Road. Turn right on Galm and proceed to the entrance. Meet at
8:00 AM at the entrance. $6 park fee (or park pass)
