December 18, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. - Field Trip to Choke Canyon State Park.  We will bird the Calliham Unit in the morning and move to the South Shore Unit for lunch and more birding. Meet at the Calliham Unit Entrance reached by driving west from Three Rivers on Hwy. 72 about 12 miles. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. As you know, our weather can vary very much this time of year, so dress accordingly. Leader will be Mike Sims.

December 4, Saturday, 8:00 A.M.  Field Trip to Maverick Ranch.  Take IH-10 West to the Leon Springs exit. Go to the flashing light in Leon Springs and turn left on Boerne Stage Road. Go under the expressway and continue straight on Boerne Stage Road 3 miles to a Stop sign, and turn right (still on Boerne Stage Road). Go 1.4 miles to the ranch gate on the left where we will meet our hosts Bebe and Mary Finstirmaker.

October 30 Saturday,  8:00 AM - Castroville Regional Park.  Take highway 90 West to Castroville. As you drive through town, there's a sign for the park on the left near the cemeteries. Turn left and drive to the park entrance where we'll meet. We will also bird the grounds of the Landmark Inn State Park.  Bring a lunch.

Highlights: Audubon's Oriole, 4 Couch's Kingbirds, Eastern Bluebirds and rain at the Regional Park. 2 Black Phoebes and the Landmark Inn.

September 25, Saturday, 8:30 A.M. - Field trip to the Hawk Watch at Hazel Bazemore County Park, which is about 130 miles south of San Antonio. Go south on IH-37 to exit 14, US 77 South. Proceed 0.5 miles to the exit for FM 624 (Up River Road). Turn right at the light, then 0.75 miles to the en-trance sign for the county park. At the Ranger Station, go left down the hill, past the pavilion to Hawk Watch area on the bluff, then look for leaders Richard and Mike Sims in the crowd. Plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m., and then meet at the parking lot near the restrooms at 11:00 a.m. We will decide at this time whether to stay at the Hawk Watch or take our normal side trips to Tule Lake and Hans Sutter Park. Bring a lunch, folding chairs, and a hat.

A day examining the largest lakes in Bexar County to see what birds we can record this time of year. Meet at the boat ramp just inside the entrance to Calaveras Lake. To get there, take IH-37 South past Braunig Lake to Loop 1604. Go east on 1604, past Hwy 181, to Stuart Road. Go north (left) on Stuart Road to the park entrance. Save the $3 entrance
fee receipt for same-day entrance to Braunig lake. Bring lunch and a scope.

Sat. July 3  7:30am Field trip to Southside Lions Park, located on Pecan Valley Drive between Hwy 90 and IH-410 South. Turn right at the park entrance and go around the lake to the lakeside parking lot. This park has a large pond, creek bottom, moist woodlands, and a brushy area. We once had a Red-bellied Woodpecker in this park. Leader is Richard Sims (655-8995).

Highlights:  ~65 species seen, including Golden-crowned Kinglet, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Vermilion Flycatcher, Marsh Wren , Common Yellowthroat, and Cooper's Hawk.

Sat. Feb. 6, 8:00am Cartwright Ranch with leader Jean Bensmiller.
This trip combines close-up brush birding and lake birding using scopes. We have seen over 100 species on past trips. We will look for ducks, geese, Lark Bunting, Sandhill Crane, Long-billed Curlew, Green Jay, Couch’s Kingbird, Great Kiskadee, Pyrrhuloxia, Roseate Spoonbill and other winter birds. The ranch is about 90 miles south of San Antonio. Take I-37 south to Exit 47 (FM 3024 and FM 534). Continue on the access road one mile south to Swinney Switch. Turn right on FM 534 (at the only intersection in town) and drive to the beginning of the causeway to meet leader Jean Bensmiller . Those of you who were with us last year will remember that we ran “afowl” of the law. Because of this, we ask you to not congregate on the causeway as to block traffic, but to wait for Jean to begin. Bring lunch and drinks. There are no restrooms, so be sure to stop at the rest area or the store in Swinney Switch. Allow two hours to get there; car pooling is encouraged.

Sat. Jan. 30,  8:00am  Eisenhower Park. Entrance on left side of Military Drive 1.1 miles north of 1604 just before the entrance to Camp Bullis.

Sat. Jan. 16, 8:00am - New Braunfels. This is a primiarily driving survey of the wintering area of Sandhill Cranes, Mountain Plovers, and Longspurs. If time permits, other good birding spots in the area will be visited. Sue Wiedenfeld is leader.  Meet at the Clear Springs Cafe. Go north on I-35, take exit for SR 46 and turn right. Go two or three miles toward Seguin until you reach the village of Clear Springs. Bring snacks and/or lunch.
