September 25, Saturday, 8:30 A.M. - Field trip to the Hawk Watch at Hazel Bazemore County Park, which is about 130 miles south of San Antonio. Go south on IH-37 to exit 14, US 77 South. Proceed 0.5 miles to the exit for FM 624 (Up River Road). Turn right at the light, then 0.75 miles to the en-trance sign for the county park. At the Ranger Station, go left down the hill, past the pavilion to Hawk Watch area on the bluff, then look for leaders Richard and Mike Sims in the crowd. Plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m., and then meet at the parking lot near the restrooms at 11:00 a.m. We will decide at this time whether to stay at the Hawk Watch or take our normal side trips to Tule Lake and Hans Sutter Park. Bring a lunch, folding chairs, and a hat.

This trip combines close-up brush birding and lake birding using scopes.
We have seen over 100 species on past trips. We will look for ducks, geese,
Lark Bunting, Sandhill Crane, Long-billed Curlew, Green Jay, Couch’s Kingbird,
Great Kiskadee, Pyrrhuloxia, Roseate Spoonbill and other winter birds.
The ranch is about 90 miles south of San Antonio. Take I-37 south to Exit
47 (FM 3024 and FM 534). Continue on the access road one mile south to
Swinney Switch. Turn right on FM 534 (at the only intersection in town)
and drive to the beginning of the causeway to meet leader Jean Bensmiller
. Those of you who were with us last year will remember that we ran “afowl”
of the law. Because of this, we ask you to not congregate on the causeway
as to block traffic, but to wait for Jean to begin. Bring lunch and
drinks. There are no restrooms, so be sure to stop at the rest area or
the store in Swinney Switch. Allow two hours to get there; car pooling
is encouraged.
