1999 SAAS Field Trips

December 25, Saturday, 10:00 A.M. Field trip to Mitchell Lake with Ernie Roney  -- Because this is Christmas Day, Ernie will not start the walk until 10:00 a.m. Meet him at the entrance gate located on the east side of Moursand Blvd., 0.7 miles south of SE Loop 410 (exit 46).December 19, Sunday -  Christmas Bird Count. contact Ernie Roney if you wish to participate.

December 18, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. - Field Trip to Choke Canyon State Park.  We will bird the Calliham Unit in the morning and move to the South Shore Unit for lunch and more birding. Meet at the Calliham Unit Entrance reached by driving west from Three Rivers on Hwy. 72 about 12 miles. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. As you know, our weather can vary very much this time of year, so dress accordingly. Leader will be Mike Sims.

December 11, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. -  Beginner's Bird Walk at Judson Nature Trails. Leader: Georgina Schwartz.

Highlights: Spotted Towhee, White-throated Sparrow, Flicker, Am. Crow.  and Am Goldfinches

December 4, Saturday, 8:00 A.M.  Field Trip to Maverick Ranch.  Take IH-10 West to the Leon Springs exit. Go to the flashing light in Leon Springs and turn left on Boerne Stage Road. Go under the expressway and continue straight on Boerne Stage Road 3 miles to a Stop sign, and turn right (still on Boerne Stage Road). Go 1.4 miles to the ranch gate on the left where we will meet our hosts Bebe and Mary Finstirmaker.

November 27, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. Field trip to Mitchell Lake with Ernie Roney

November 20, Saturday 8:00 AM - San Antonio Audubon Society trip to the Pullin Ranch at Whitsett about  80 miles south of San Antonio. Meet at the ranch at 8:00 AM.  Bring lunch.

Highlights: Green Jay, Black-throated Sparrow, Barn Owl, Barred Owl.

November 13, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. -  Beginner's Bird Walk at Judson Nature Trails. Leader: Georgina Schwartz.

Highlights: Sage Thrasher, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, American Robin

November 6, Saturday 8:00AM - San Antonio Audubon Society trip to Guadalupe River State Park. Meet at the gate at 8:00 AM. Bring lunch.  Park fees apply.  For info, call SAAS birdline at 308-6788

October 30 Saturday,  8:00 AM - Castroville Regional Park.  Take highway 90 West to Castroville. As you drive through town, there's a sign for the park on the left near the cemeteries. Turn left and drive to the park entrance where we'll meet. We will also bird the grounds of the Landmark Inn State Park.  Bring a lunch.

Highlights: Audubon's Oriole, 4 Couch's Kingbirds, Eastern Bluebirds and rain at the Regional Park. 2 Black Phoebes and the Landmark Inn.

October 23, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. Field trip to Mitchell Lake with Ernie Roney

October 16, Saturday 8:00 AM -  Bamberger Nature Park on Babcock Road at Leon Creek in NW San Antonio. This city park is still unimproved with no real trails yet. Parking will be across Babcock Road at the Last Chance Forever Bird Refuge. Meet leader Tom
Richards at the parking area.

Highlights: Brown Thrasher, N. Bobwhite.

October 9, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. -  Beginner's Bird Walk at Judson Nature Trails. Leader: Georgina Schwartz.

Highlights: American Redstart.

September 25, Saturday, 8:30 A.M. - Field trip to the Hawk Watch at Hazel Bazemore County Park, which is about 130 miles south of San Antonio. Go south on IH-37 to exit 14, US 77 South. Proceed 0.5 miles to the exit for FM 624 (Up River Road). Turn right at the light, then 0.75 miles to the en-trance sign for the county park. At the Ranger Station, go left down the hill, past the pavilion to Hawk Watch area on the bluff, then look for leaders Richard and Mike Sims in the crowd. Plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m., and then meet at the parking lot near the restrooms at 11:00 a.m. We will decide at this time whether to stay at the Hawk Watch or take our normal side trips to Tule Lake and Hans Sutter Park. Bring a lunch, folding chairs, and a hat.

September 18, Saturday, 8:00 A.M. - Field trip to the San Antonio Botanical Center with leader Richard Sims (655-8995). Meet in the parking lot, then up the hill to enjoy the fall flowers and birds.

Highlights: Yellow Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Am. Redstart, Nashville Warbler, Couch's Kingbird, Warbling Vireo, Long-billed Thrasher.

Sat.  July 31  8:00am -  “Lakes” tour of Calaveras and Braunig Lakes with leader Richard Grant (655-8864). A day examining the largest lakes in Bexar County to see what birds we can record this time of year. Meet at the boat ramp just inside the entrance to Calaveras Lake. To get there, take IH-37 South past Braunig Lake to Loop 1604. Go east on 1604, past Hwy 181, to Stuart Road. Go north (left) on Stuart Road to the park entrance. Save the $3 entrance
fee receipt for same-day entrance to Braunig lake. Bring lunch and a scope.

Highlights: Least Bittern, Forster's Tern, Common Moorhen

Sat. July 17, 8:00am - Birding trip to Hidden Valley Recreational Park. This is a private park with a $2 fee for a morning of birding. To reach the park, go south on IH-35 to exit for Fischer Road. Go about .7 mile to Hidden Valley sign on gravel road to right; then south about a mile to the gate, where we will meet. Birding will be around two lakes and along the Medina River. Leader: Keith Bartels

Highlights: Summer Tanager, E. Bluebird, Couch's KIngbird (heard only), Long-billed Curlew

Highlights: Lesser Goldfinch, Western Kingbird, Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Western Scrub-Jay, Am. Crow, Great Crested Flycatcher and Ash-throated Flycatcher.

Sat. July 3  7:30am Field trip to Southside Lions Park, located on Pecan Valley Drive between Hwy 90 and IH-410 South. Turn right at the park entrance and go around the lake to the lakeside parking lot. This park has a large pond, creek bottom, moist woodlands, and a brushy area. We once had a Red-bellied Woodpecker in this park. Leader is Richard Sims (655-8995).

Highlights: Painted Bunting, Lesser Goldfinch, Purple Martins

Sat. May 29, 8:00 AM    Field trip to the MO Ranch at Hunt, Texas, for a new experience looking for Hill Country birds. The trip will be led by Richard Sims, assisted by Becky Hedden, Naturalist for the ranch. You may bring a lunch, or dine at the ranch dining hall for $6.75. To get to the ranch, travel I-10 West past Kerrville to Hwy 41 (Mountain Home). After about 20 miles on Hwy 41, turn left on Hwy 1340 and go approximately 11 miles to the ranch. Meet in the lobby of the Registration Building.

Sat.  April 3, 8:00am  - Field trip to the University of the Incarnate Word campus with leader Betty Walters. Meet in front of the Nursing Building on Hildebrand, East of Hwy 281. A stroll through the campus looking for early migrants and late winter residents.

Highlights: Canyon Wren, Neotropic Cormorant, Nashville Warblers, Wood Duck, Field Sparrow, Lesser Goldfinch.

Saturday, March 20, 7:30am -  Field trip to Haggard Ranch. Meet leader Ernie Roney at the new Texaco station at the southwest cor-ner of Hwy 1604 and IH-35 South. We will drive from there to the ranch. This ranch is in the Christmas Bird Count area and should prove to be interesting.

Highlights:  ~65 species seen, including Golden-crowned Kinglet, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Vermilion Flycatcher, Marsh Wren , Common Yellowthroat, and Cooper's Hawk.

Sat. March 6, 8:00am - Field trip to Old Wiederstein Road. Susan Schaezler has invited us to her place. To get there, take IH-35 North to the Hwy 3009 exit (Garden Ridge) and meet in the HEB parking lot near the video store. We will drive to the Old Wiederstein Road location, where there are acres of di-verse habitat for us to bird. Bring a lunch and snacks.

Sat. Feb. 13, 8:00am - Beginner's Bird Walk at Judson Nature Trails. Leader: Georgina Schwartz.
Workday: At 12 Noon, or after the birding, we will pick up trash along the trails or work around the trailhouse. Bring
gloves and heavy shoes. Cancel (the trash pickup, not the birding) if it rains.

Highlights: Long-billed Thrasher, Red-shouldered Hawk, Downy Woodpecker, Am. Crow, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Lesser Goldfinch.

Sat. Feb. 6, 8:00am Cartwright Ranch with leader Jean Bensmiller.
This trip combines close-up brush birding and lake birding using scopes. We have seen over 100 species on past trips. We will look for ducks, geese, Lark Bunting, Sandhill Crane, Long-billed Curlew, Green Jay, Couch’s Kingbird, Great Kiskadee, Pyrrhuloxia, Roseate Spoonbill and other winter birds. The ranch is about 90 miles south of San Antonio. Take I-37 south to Exit 47 (FM 3024 and FM 534). Continue on the access road one mile south to Swinney Switch. Turn right on FM 534 (at the only intersection in town) and drive to the beginning of the causeway to meet leader Jean Bensmiller . Those of you who were with us last year will remember that we ran “afowl” of the law. Because of this, we ask you to not congregate on the causeway as to block traffic, but to wait for Jean to begin. Bring lunch and drinks. There are no restrooms, so be sure to stop at the rest area or the store in Swinney Switch. Allow two hours to get there; car pooling is encouraged.

Sat. Jan. 30,  8:00am  Eisenhower Park. Entrance on left side of Military Drive 1.1 miles north of 1604 just before the entrance to Camp Bullis.

Highlights: Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Dark-eyed (Slate-colored) Junco, Field Sparrow

Sat. Jan. 23, 8:00am - Monthly field trip to Mitchell Lake with Ernie Roney.

Sat. Jan. 16, 8:00am - New Braunfels. This is a primiarily driving survey of the wintering area of Sandhill Cranes, Mountain Plovers, and Longspurs. If time permits, other good birding spots in the area will be visited. Sue Wiedenfeld is leader.  Meet at the Clear Springs Cafe. Go north on I-35, take exit for SR 46 and turn right. Go two or three miles toward Seguin until you reach the village of Clear Springs. Bring snacks and/or lunch.
